This catalogue presents a major retrospective of one of the most important figures in Czech art – Stanislav Kolíbal – which was held at Ostrava’s House of Art (Dům umění) in 2015. Following an opening text by Martin Dostál, the catalogue is divided into three chronological sections – the first covering the period 1954–1961 and the last spanning 2004–2014. Each section comprises black-and-white photographic reproductions and brief texts written by Kolíbal himself. The publication as a whole characterizes Kolíbal’s work as it developed over the course of his career. It offers an analytical view of this oeuvre, precisely tracing Kolíbal’s artistic development from stylized figural sculpture to the typical obsessively geometric structures that characterized his later period. It also provides a representative view of the various techniques, materials and forms that Kolíbal used, unified by his distinctive artistic signature as he explored the interconnections, possibilities and boundaries of geometric forms.
